ride classification guide

* Way easy    ** Easy    *** Moderate    **** Difficult    ***** Way difficult

Another way to put it is by the comments which beginners might offer after the ride:

*

"Oh, man, that was so easy, I could do it again right now"

**

"Hey, that wasn't too bad. I could do this again tomorrow"

***

"Man, is my butt sore. I need to ride more than twice a year"

****

"OH MY GOD!! I'm sticking to watching TV and eating Cheesy Poofs!!"

*****

"Tell my wife that I love her, and that my will is in the
safe deposit box·aaarrghhh!!"

If you're new to cycling, some important things to remember are:

  • Don't push yourself too hard at first
  • Don't wait too long until your next ride
  • If you ride three times a week, your butt will be sore for about two weeks. After that, it won't hurt any more (and yes, you will still be able to feel it)
  • If you buy a cheap bike at K-Mart, disregard the last statement. You will always be in pain after a ride. Get a REAL bike (and spend at least several hundred dollars) if you want to ride long distances often (say, 40 miles at least twice a week) and NOT be in pain. Make sure that the bike shop sells you a bike that fits you, not one that's on sale.
  • After you buy that REAL bike, invest in good cycling clothes. Cotton underwear and jean shorts will rub your skin raw.
  • You can never drink enough water on a ride. Drink before you're thirsty, and eat before you're hungry
  • Subscribe to a good cycling magazine (like Bicycling), and learn about the sport the easy way.
  • If you have questions, ask your fellow cyclists! We were all beginners once ourselves.
  • HAVE FUN!!!
